re: UK TV documentary 18/5/2007, Dispatches, on Channel 4... detailing plight of girls / women in Afghanistan... for example: girls as young as 7 sold into marriage, kept house-bound, beaten by husband, mother-in-law, not allowed to be educated, they cook, clean, sew (are forced to remain ignorant to suit the men)... one woman every 28 minutes dying in child-birth, their husband decides if / when they need medical help... result: ruptured uterus... once girl has died, the village forget all about her... so system carries on.
The poor girls / women are using kerosene to set fire to themselves... to show that in life they suffered... if they live, in pain as few drugs...
Things worse in Afghanistan now since the allies war... the huge sums for reconstruction have disappeared - gone to the rich, not the poor...
Surely, there must be some way other women can reach these women, to let them know we care, we support their wish for greater freedom/s, for education, for more equality...
