We have a bug thats about 1 inch long, brownish/blackish in color, and has pinchers on both ends. They seem to be attracted to damp places....they look to me to be a beetle of some sort. Anyone knkow what these things are? Must say, I'm a little frightened of them.

Also on that same note....if you are living in a mobile home is it possible for your pipes to freeze if you have no furnace even though you have heat tape on your pipes?

We've tried everything it seems, and it only slows them down for maybe a week.

We've got the little ant houses with bait that is supposed to kill the whole colony, we've put ant spikes in the gardens, sprayed the exterior of the house, and put out some other posoin on little pieces of cardboard. (Its late, I don't have the names of treatments at the moment)

The little buggers are everywhere, not really isolated to one area, they seem to be taking over the place. Any food that doesn't come in a can or jar has to be in the fridge, I'm emptying the garbage can to the outside one daily, and I've moved the recycling bin to the garage and they still won't go away.

What else can I do?

First of all it gets pepper all over the table. I have one that has its grinding part at the top so when you use it you turn it upside down. Then set it back down with the grinding part at the top and it never makes a mess. Doesn't this bother anyone else?

I bought a blood orange tree about 3 months ago and its planted in good soil, I have a shade over the top cause teh sun here is merciless and it gets about 125 tops. Its very humid during summers and so far the tree seems to be doing just fine. I keep it watered regulary if not all the time. Its still pretty small. I want to know when it will start growing more. What kind of fertilizer should I use?

I cut down a two year old oak tree which had died but left a couple of flowering shoots intact which were coming of the base of the trunk. Now there are about 6 of these shoots and they have grown about 8-10 inches and are flourishing.

Will these grow into a new tree(s) or will it just become an oak bush?

I moved into a rental house in Houston, TX at the beginning of this year and my last electric bill was almost $800. I fully expect my September/October bills to go over $1000. I may be living here for an additional year so I am looking to do something to increase the energy efficiency of the house. Since I'm renting it doesn't make financial sense to get a more efficient air conditioner, insulation, radiant barrier, or better windows. Just to give you some details on the house: It's two stories, around 3400 sq ft., has two air conditioners (one for the upstairs and one for the downstairs). My wife is pregnant so unless I want to get stabbed in the throat with a screwdriver turning the air up is not an option. Any ideas on some things I can do to lower my electric bill that will be cost effective considering the amount of time that I am going to be living here?

I've tried cayanne pepper and other deterents, but they keep digging them up and gnawing them to pieces. Any humane ideas on how to keep these cute pests off them?
