I've tried cayanne pepper and other deterents, but they keep digging them up and gnawing them to pieces. Any humane ideas on how to keep these cute pests off them?

Get a bag of dried field corn or sunflower seeds...If corn, put a nail in a tree far away as possilbe from your patio. cut the end of the nail head, and stick the ear of corn on the nail.

Get a cheap bird/squirrel feeder, place far away from patio and fill with sunflower seeds.

Either case, they'll go for the better food source, and leave your patio plants alone.

good luck

blend some warm sauce, some thing like Tabasco, in a sprig bottle with some water. Spray it on your cover and the rest the little rodents are chewing on. One style and that they won't come back for extra.

There are several squirrel repellents on the market. Some of them are made from scent/urine on natural predators. See them at the site below:

I got a tom cat for outside. I got him for mice, but he does an outstanding job keeping the squirells out of my garden and even the fruit trees. (Love my cat!)

Squirrels were bothering my hen and chickens plant. I finally gave up and put chicken wire over the pot. They haven't bothered it since.
