because some long ago child opened one once and knocked over a fine vase and the father lied and told the child that this was a terrible terrible thing to do as it will cause ghosts to in habit the house forever and to NEVER do that again after he spread salt all around the house to get rid of that ghost
in other words its a made up story and superstition to stop people from opening an umbrella in the house so things want get broken.superstitions were made up for a reason.like breaking a mirror is bad luck. some bar owner made up that superstition so drunk people wouldn't break his valuable mirror.mirrors used to cost a LOT.

It is an old superstition that the person will have bad luck.
Probably someone years and years ago stumbled over one and broke a bone.

Nice story - how do you dry it out after coming in from the rain - You open it in the shower or tub so it will dry out and not get moldy.
