Had they been wall tiles in a low-impact position, I might have taken a chance with enamel paint.

I'm not sure it would work for a floor, however. And definitely not in a bathroom.

So, how can a medium brown ceramic tile be darkened a couple of shades to a more attractive colour? I heard there are some penetrating sealers which may do this. The tile surface is rough, not glossy at all.

Any comments?

Or do I just bite the bullet and pay for the whole floor to be ripped out and re-tiled?

I'm going to help my brother re-due his bathroom. (Paint it mainly). There is a window right in his Shower, and one side of the window box is rotted out. What type of wood can I buy at like Home Depot that I can put in there that won't rot. That I can paint white or already is white.

I have been using a 1500 watt space heater in my office because it's freezing in my building. Recently, it's started to cause the power to go out in my office and ones adjacent to mine on the same circuit. There is no where else to plug in that will be on a less-used circuit. Is there a certain space heater I can buy that won't trip the circuit breaker all the time? (I've heard that the oil ones use less electricity?) Or is there a power-strip I can plug it into that will trip instead of bothering this whole side of the building by allowing the whole circuit breaker to trip? What can I do? I'm freezing!!!

There were sockets in our hanging fixture over the dining table that bulbs were still broken inside. Someone was trying to take them out with plyers when POOF! All of the lights went out in the dining room & kitchen. I flicked the breaker on and off; still nothing. His plyers have a burn mark. Did he completely burn out the wiring in the dining room and kitchen?

here is the chandelier type of lightning fixure that had the broken bulbs in it:

here is a close up of one of the sockets in the hanging fixture; you can still see like a wire or metal piece hanging out:

Here is the light fixture in our kitchen, which is not working now either:

...About 1/8 inch, round body, usually brown or gray with a dark head. It is usually just one or two -- never a large cluster.

Could it be termites? I live in a Northern Virginia (classified as mid-atlantic) suburb and being that the body shape isn't very ant-like & the fact that it's the Fall and not Spring. I'm hoping it's not a termite infestation...

One of the lights in our backyard is a lamp post. It’s the kind you see everywhere (4 panes of glass, black metal frame and cap).

The lamp post is located at the edge of our property and when we turn it on it shines on our yard as well as our neighbors. The neighbors don’t want the light, so is there a way to reflect it back onto our yard? We need more light in our yard actually, so the more light we can reflect back to us the better.

What are some ways of doing that? Could I put a reflective film on the glass panes that face the neighbors’ yard? Maybe use something like mylar film?

Or is there a material that is more light-reflective than mylar? And do I need to worry about an increase of heat inside the lighting unit?

Thanks much!

I have an electric furnace & within the last few days it started blowing out cold air. (it has done it before) I can't set my heat higher than 62 right now & it's 30 outside. If I set it higher after running for like 2 minutes =, it starts blowing out really cold air. If I reset the breaker it will work again~ at least until it kicks on again. My husband said it was the thermostat, so we replaced it but it didn't work I keep asking him to try to replace the breaker just to see if that is the problem, but he won't even try it. Anybody know what else it could be?

I heat my home with a gas-fired hot water boiler (Crown). My digital thermostat is dysfunctional and needs replacing. I've purchased a RiteTemp 7-day programable thermostat similar to the broken one that takes 2 AA batteries. There are 3 wires connected to the old thermostat. Do I need to shut down the electric power to my heater in order to replace the thermostat? If I don't, is there danger of electrical shock or damage to the equipment?

Every time I run the water in my kitchen sink, after a few seconds it backs up. Also happens when I run the dishwasher. A few hours later it drains out, VERY slowly. We have tried using a pipe snake to no avail, I think it's clogged really far down.
However, we have been in this house 4 years and have only just realized we may not be on city sewer but a septic tank. (the City says we aren't paying for city sewer so either we have one or we're somehow getting it free) Maybe it's plugged? But if it was wouldn't the water not be draining at all? And the other drains in the house aren't plugged like the kitchen. Help! I'm going insane and don't want to waste money on a plumber snaking the drains if it's a septic problem, and vice versa.

My friend is freaking out because the insulated door protecting her hot water tank for her trailer home has been removed to be fixed. They were supposed to bring the door back this afternoon but it turns out they won't actually until tomorrow. Anyways, the low tonight is going to be about 21 degrees with 20-25 mph winds. She's deathly afraid the tank will freeze although the door repair man assured her leaving hot water faucets dripping should be sufficient to ward it off. The tank is protected on three exterior walls by the laundry room, kitchen and furnace room respectively. I'd assume some heat is being given off through these walls. I suggested draining the tank to assuage her fears but she seems unable/unwilling to do that. She is going to duct tape some plastic garbage bags over the opening although she cannot reach to the top of it. I guess I'm looking for an assessment of whether she really has anything to worry about or what else can be done besides draining the tank.

I have one of those small dorm refrigerators. It's really pretty quiet normally. Since past friday though it's been making a lot of noise when the cooling thing goes on. It's a very loud buzzing/rattling sound. It will go one for 10-15 minutes then turn off. I checked the back and the bottom for anything that might have come loose but didn't notice anything. Also, it's working fine otherwise.

I'd rather not ask the residence admins to replace it. What could be wrong with it and is there something I can do about it?

I've even poured bleach down the drains thinking maybe something is stuck down there and rotting, but the smell still is there. Any ideas what it could be?

My apartment is very stuffy--even worse now that the heat is on. (I have my own furnace.) I replaced the carpets with laminate flooring, thinking that would help, but it has not. There is only one set of windows in the apartment, in the bedroom--none in the living room, kitchen, or bathroom. Do you have any suggestions as to how to make it less stuffy and more liveable? (Suggestions not involving a humidifier are most welcome.) My cat and I are miserable; I had a bloody nose this morning from the dryness, and he seems to have lost his meower.
