...About 1/8 inch, round body, usually brown or gray with a dark head. It is usually just one or two -- never a large cluster.

Could it be termites? I live in a Northern Virginia (classified as mid-atlantic) suburb and being that the body shape isn't very ant-like & the fact that it's the Fall and not Spring. I'm hoping it's not a termite infestation...

Also, the bugs don't tend to move much. I can usually squish it without a fight since it stays still.

Do a search of images for either "wood lice" or isopods.

If that is what you have, they are harmless. (Although, some of the types that live in the ocean are wicked bad.) Terrestrial isopods are totally harmless.

Termites don't really wander outside of their nests, except when mating in the spring.

They are probably hibernating for the winter.

Try setting some boxes of cling free dryer sheets int eh areas they are collecting. Many times the critters don't like the smell. Bugs and rodents both.

Termites look like flying ants.

Might be termites

I would call the extirmiator just in case.
