My apartment is very stuffy--even worse now that the heat is on. (I have my own furnace.) I replaced the carpets with laminate flooring, thinking that would help, but it has not. There is only one set of windows in the apartment, in the bedroom--none in the living room, kitchen, or bathroom. Do you have any suggestions as to how to make it less stuffy and more liveable? (Suggestions not involving a humidifier are most welcome.) My cat and I are miserable; I had a bloody nose this morning from the dryness, and he seems to have lost his meower.

First open a window. Second, see about installing a ventilation fan in the wall or window to bring in some fresh air and vent out stale air. Third, make sure you change the air filter in your furnace regularly - thin cardboard filters should be changed monthly. Check with the furnace and air filter manufacturers. With pets they have to be changed more often. You can have a professional measure and test indoor air quality using a device called an Air Advice - http://www.airadvice.com/residential/do-i-need-iaq-test.php

You can also get a plug in air filter for your stuffy rooms but make sure its a HEPA filter and beware of ozone machines - some produce too much ozone and can reduce air quality.

Put a fan in the window.
What kind of heat do you have - forced air, baseboard?
Maybe you can cover up the heat registers with a thick carpet or even a blanket or towel.

Can you turn down the thermostat?
If you have your own furnace, there's always the option of turning it off for a few hours during the day.
