I have a brand new home (3 years old). I'm a finatic about cleaning, but there is this funky smell in my bathroom and I can't find out where it is coming from. I've even poured bleach down the drains thinking maybe something is stuck down there and rotting, but the smell still is there. Any ideas what it could be?

I had a call 2 weeks ago for a woman having the same problem in her downstairs bathroom. There was a toilet, sink and shower stall that smelled like the devil, After 10 minutes of checking the toilet and the sink I moved on over to the shower. As soon as I opened the curtain did I know I had the culprit. It seams that this shower hasn't been used in months and all of the water in the "P" trap evaporated allowing sewer gas up through the drain an into the room. I turned the shower on and before it even got warm I was done. So now the home owner is turning the shower on for a minute or every week. Make sure all drains have water in the trap as this is how sewer gases are kept out. You may have a dead rodent, squirel or other causing the problem if not plumbing related.

I have no idea what is causing the smell. To eliminate the odor, try putting out a medium size tray of cat litter or florist charcoal; it is suppose to absorb the odor.

If that doesn't work to your satisfaction, make some citrus pomander balls. Put three or four in a platter out on the counter. These homemade pomander balls are heavenly!! Are said to last up to a year but I put mine in a lingerie drawer after about 6 months. And make more balls.

No not really. Call the home builder or if you live in a gated community than you can cal maintenance people. Who knows perhaps something is wrong with the sewer system. I live in Northern Utah. Nearby the Salt Lake. Sometimes I think it's my bath room that stinks. When in actuality its the Lake when the weather changes.

The wax ring seal under the toilet may be leaking.
You may have a dead mouse or other small animal in a wall, above the ceiling or under the floor.
It might be a plugged sewer vent pipe.

Without a better description of the odor itself it is hard to guess where it might be coming from.

if the smell is all the sudden, i would worry that the sewer is backing up on you. if it is gradually getting worse, i would worry that something died in there. maybe a mouse or something that got trapped and died. shut the door and turn the fan on for about 30 mins and see if it helps.
