Right now we have a large, heavy mirror blocking the fireplace so the air doesn't escape. Our landlord shoving newspaper up the fireplace to prevent the airflow, but this sounds like a fire hazard to me. I don't want to pay money for a damper for a home that we don't own, but I don't want cold air getting into the house, either. Is a fireplace useable without a damper?

We are buying a house and it is a tri level, so the bottom floor is half way under ground and has two bedrooms, both of the floors slant slightly toward the outside wall. We have heard to "thincoat" the basement floor by pouring in concrete until it levels. I was wondering if anyone can explain this process or tell me where to find out how to do it. Also I was wondering the approximate cost and if a random person with no experience could make this work. The floor wouldn't need to look finished b/c we are putting laminate flooring on top. We have heard that mudjacking is another option, so if anyone has any advice between the two or knows the cost difference, we would appreiciate any help. Thanks!!

I have cleaned my whirlpool gas stove in and out and have pulled it away from the wall and cleaned under it and behind it. When I turn it on, as it heats up, a black smoke starts coming out from it and my fire detectors go off. It is not in the main part of the oven but somewhere below because I can see it coming through the cracks inside the oven. I can't tell what the problem is- I know it is not because it needs cleaned- it is spotless on the inside! Any suggestions?

I some how managed to get a large mark with permanent marker on my off white metal screen door. I tried removing the marker with nail polish remover and damaged the finish. Is there anyway to repair the finish without repainting the entire door?

The guy in the store told my cousin to leave it running to avoid having the compressor seize. It costs money to leave it running and I said - well in Florida, we have a power failure nearly once a month during the summer and fall, so how much better would this be than leaving it off for 8 months ???

I own a property which I just discovered has some asbestos ductwork as part of the HVAC system. It is largely intact except for the return air duct which looks like it was roughly cut-back in the 1940's to fit over it's opening.

I just had a new HVAC unit put in which replaced (believe it or not) the original one from the 1940's. The new furnace seems to blow air out harder than the old and I'm worried that some old asbestos dust could be now circulating through the air of the house due to the increased air flow.

Is there a way to collect a sample of the air in the house and have it analzyed? I"m thinking maybe of vacumming the house and sending the air filter to a testing lab. Or??????

Thanks in advance for your help on this....

I ran all new plumbing in my home. I used pvc through the whole hose except for the hot water heater. The copper lines looked solid coming through the floor so I sweated a couple of fittings to convert to PVC. A few weeks later I am installing a new bathtub and went to sweat a couple of fittings to fabricate a pipe. I looked at my solder and it says 50/tin 50/lead. Oops! I must have grabbed the wrong solder at the hardware store. This is the same solder I used for my hot water heater. I am looking at hours of work to cut out the fittings on the water heater. Is this a major problem as far as health risks or since it is such a small amount maybe it is OK?

My wife and I are having a debate on whether a light bill can be between$30-$35 dollars when owning a house. I believe it can if we change the light bulbs to halogen or led bulbs and turn of the lights in rooms that are not occupied.

The motor head is spitting out rubbish and pushing out dust. The base canister unit seem to be working properly. I checked and the vacuum dust bag is fine and does not need to be changed yet. I believe the fault is in the extension with the motor head. I've browsed some websites and do not see it offered as an accessory. Do you think it could be replaced? Thanks.
