This is the first I've ever heard of leaving a refrigerator running if it's not going to be used for a long period of time. I've frequently rented vacation homes and always found the fridge turned off with the door slightly ajar and that's how I leave it when I depart.

I have never heard of this compressor freezing up thing. It sounds dubious to me. In eight months of wasting electicity you could probably buy a new fridge for the money you would save anyway.

yes leave it running. Just turn the knob so the temperature is higher. A frig only cost 60$ a year with opening and closing the door. With the temp up and the door closed it will only cost you 20$ for 8 month

Ummm ... refrigerators are made to be turned off. Just take out all the food first!

No you should turn it off, but open it up before you leave, never leave it closed, it could grow mold.
