We have just pulled out 1000 sf of t & G oak flooring from a house being demolished. It was nailed in during the 50's, hand-nailed, large, heavy "cut nails." The nails were pulled out intact with the floor.
We're planning to re-lay the floor in a house we're renovating, and looking for a way to get the nails out of the tongues without damaging the wood strips. Pulling them back through the tongues would damage the wood. Any good way to clip or grind the nails off?

Or can some plumber explain in detail what a plumbing company does to fix an underground cast iron water line? This seems to be some big secret only a very few people know. How hard can it be to fix a cracked or disjoined cast iron water pipe? What is involved besides digging a hole, cutting some pipe, and putting some new pipe in and welding it together?

Hi,
We will be selling our house soon and potential buyers will come to see the house. I want it to smell nice but not too strong. Are those airwick plug-ins too strong?

I know you can put cinnamon sticks and lemon wedges on the stove etc.. however I won't be here for a period of one to two weeks so what can I do to keep the house smelling nice. Would you recommend a leaving a bit of pine sol in the toilet?? My husband will be here so he can do something.
Joanne

I've now seen 2 reports of this on a TV consumer program, but they don't say exactly what causes it. The reports related to groups of new-builds in 2 housing estates in UK.
Apparently the developers say it is due to the residents not using enough water to keep the pipework flushed (which is obviously denied by the residents). The other reason they gave is high levels of phosphates in the water reacting with the copper, but it sounded like the water company & independant tests proved otherwise. Some residents have had to have all their pipework replaced to resolve it - but they don't say why.
Does anyone out there know what really might be causing it, because I don't like a mystery!
I always thought copper-pipe was a long-proven safe material for water transport, and it would only start to oxidize in the presence of lots of oxygen (eg the pipes were run-dry/airlocked)?

I have two toilets on the second floor of my house. One sometimes drains slowly. The other (closer to the discharge) can also be slow, but it also clogs a lot. This is the one my son uses. Sometimes he clogs it with too much paper, but it also just seems to clog up for no apparent reason.

I replaced the whole toilet assembly, and it's better, but there's still a problem.

Would a partially blocked stack vent account for this? Because of the weather I haven't been able to climb up and check. And if it is the vent, and I manage to clear it, what's the best way to prevent it from happening again (presuming the vent is currently not screened off or anything). Are there stack vent covers available?

what gas furnace brand takes the least amount of electricy in a 80 percent efficent gas furnace?

Hi, I plan changing my furnace. I have a 20 year old trane 40,000 BTU. I live in a condo, Approximate lot is 2516SF. 2 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms, kitchen, living room, dining room. My gas bill on the average is $130 in the winter per month in Jersey at average 74F. I assume the old one is Single Stage, works well, but I have to change the evaporator coil, so it would cost me less, to change both furnace and evaporator coil. I have 3 guys come out, and listen to what they want to propose. I plan getting an 80% AFUE, all recommend 80,000 BTU, that has 64000 BTU output, dont quite get, why all say I need 80000BTU, only one person said I need 60000BTU. Now I have to choose, single vs 2 stage furnace? I know lot of people told me its great in a house, the furnace runs longer at lower speeds etc. But I live in a condo, the difference between rooms is at max 3F which is the living/dining room since its big, compare to the other rooms, so if its 74 everywhere, the living room is 71F.

The outlets in the bathrooms all do not have reset buttons or any buttons what so ever

I was reading that it is about 1/2 the cost to have an existing deadbolt rekeyed instead of replacing it. Can any deadbolt be rekeyed and is this an adequate solution instead of having it replaced?

Thank you.
