If the string is broken, replace it (preferably with a chain). If it the switch that connects to the string is broken, you can replace it. You can buy the switch at an electronics store, be sure to turn off the power at the breaker box before you try to change it.

If it is a ceramic fixture, you will probably have to buy a new fixture. The string goes to a switch in the fixture. Turn of the appropriate circuit breaker. Remove the 2 screws visible on the face, and slowly pull fixture downward. Note where the exixting wires connect, and remove them. Reattach new fixture in reverse order. Be careful not to pinch any wires when reinstalling the fixture. Once the 2 face screws are snugged up, turn on the circuit breaker. You should be good to go.

Sounds like the switch is broken. You will need to make sure the power is off and remove the cover from the fan and remove the switch. Take it to a hardware store and get a match. Replace.

there are so many reasons
1 the switch much be broken
2 loose wiring
if you don't know about electric better call a professional

While these are simple mechanical devices, I have never bothered trying to repair them. They are only a couple bucks for the new insert socket, or get a whole new porcelain base with an outlet for $3.99 like this one from Lowes...
