I do believe that Carrier makes an 80% furnace that uses DC drive motors. DC drive motors can run 24/7 and cost as much as leaving a 100 watt light on. However, if you are that concerned about efficiencies you could step up to a 90% single stage or a 94% two stage.

If they're both 80%, then they should use the same amount of electricity assuming that they are both the same BTU size. If it is a gas furnace, the only electricity used is for the blower motor and a very small amount for the control circuits.

You can make a difference, in the temp setting of the house and by getting a programmable thermostat to cut the heat at night and when you are at work. Adding insulation, and thermo windows will cut your gas and electric bill.

Getting a higher efficiency furnance like a 90 would also help.

In the US, electrical efficiency in gas furnaces is measured in Eae rating by a certification company called GAMA.

The parts of the furnace that use electricity are the blower motor, the inducer motor, the ignitor and the circuit board.

Unfortunately, measuring the electrical efficiency of a furnace is relatively new idea, but you can check the websites of the major manufacturers for Eae ratings of their furnances.
