Maintenance & Repairs - February 2007

I was watching House Detectives on HGTV over the weekend and the home inspector recommended one of those overflow valves (don't know what it's called) to prevent contamination from back-flow, from the disposal back into the dishwasher. They said the cost to install it was $275!

I also have a septic system and I was told not to use my garbage disposal anyway, by the inspector that checked out my house when we bought it.

I was thinking about removing the disposal anyway, but I'm wondering if I still need the overflow valve if the dishwasher isn't connected to a garbage disposal.

I've had this great idea. I live in a large caravan. What i'm doing is building a wall about five feet high around the roof. Then I'm going to fill it will water. I have my own cheaply made swimming pool! How do I get the cement to stick to the metal roof on the first layer of bricks though. I've been having trouble all morning

My contractor told me that the footings, basement/garage floors would be a great majority of the total expense of the house (good windows in there too) - but concrete?
Thanks.

When i flush my toilet my well kicks on/off around four times, I watch the pressure gauge go up to set point(60*) and shut off,and then as the toilet is still calling for water, it drops down to set point(40*).so the gauge seems to drop quickly as soon as the well shuts off. is it that my old galvanized tank is water logged?

- credit card method will NOT work; there is an edge along the door frame
- locked from the inside, with straight side of bolt in hole facing you
- minimal damage to the door preferred
- old doorknobs, left by previous owners
- no keyhole, screws to hold doorknob in place, or holes of any kind on surface of doorknob

My fiance' and I are thinking of turning our garage into a room. We are having a contractor come by tomorrow to give us an estimate. Could you give us a heads up on some things that would be good to know before we make the ultimate decision. (ex. price, advantages/disadvantages, safety, etc.)

I am on disability and cannot work, my income is less than 1200.00 a month and I pay all my bills and expenses out of it, can anyone help me. My hot water heater is leaking and this leaves me with no water because I had to shut if off from the outside to stop the leak. I would not ask for help but I am desparate.

i've got a few new (2 month old) tables from pottery barn and both are cracking. the dining table is jsut hairlines in what appears to be the veneer, but the end table, which is a differnet collection/wood is cracking more severely..
it's cracked in 5-6 spots, and all are at the edge, but go from top to bottom, thru veneer and whatever is underneath.
is there something i am doing wrong?
i have steam radiators, and know they create a dry winter home, but don't many people have the same issue?
shouldn't they take this into consideration?
they are going to take it back, but should i expect this to happen again?
looking for solutions...
thanks.

I have a concrete basketball court that is divided into 8 sections. One of the sections collects water and now has a permate low spot. Is it possible to correct this by leveling off the low spot by adding quick creat? If so what is the best way to repair?

Btw, the court is located in the back yard. An area impossible to be reached by a concrete truck. I'm trying to repair the one section without removing whats already there.

Imagine two copper water pipes extending out of a basement into a crawl space, they continue for about 10 feet, then both turn about 1 inch from the outside wall and go straight up 2 feet to the floor (this is the hot and cold water for the kitchen). I have installed a plug so I can plug the heat traces in about 6 feet back from the outside wall, now I have to replace the heat trace, I know that you have to encase the end or thermometer but having the end close to the floor could give me a false temperature reading and not allow the tape to come on in time, putting the thermometer toward the basement also gives me the same fears. Could I loop or let hang the thermometer end about 6 inches from the floor and expect safe results?

We are building a new house and it will be "roughed-in" for CV.

My question is this: When they rough it in, where is the best place to have the unit mounted? Naturally, the utility room in the unfinished part of the basement is a logical place but I'd heard that having it in the garage would cut down on the minute dust particles that don't get filtered. As well, having it in the garage would make it quieter. Then, when I mentioned this to my agent, he said that having that volume of air being sucked out of the house while vacuuming (in the winter, when the windows would always be closed) would cause air to try to re-enter the house wherever it can, be it through window or door frames, therefore causing an obvious problem.

We replaced the gears, then put it back together and we have turned the adjustment screws both ways - the ones on the front panel and the ones on the side and it will only run for 3 seconds then reverse for 3 seconds. Is there a way to reset the adjustment or get back to a starting point?

My house is less than a year old. When we had a huge amount of ice and snow we used rock salt on our driveway. Unfortunately, it ate holes in the concrete! We later found out that this should never be done unless the driveway is over a year old. So, now there are quarter sized pock marks all over our driveway. What is the best way to repair it without forking over tons of cash to a contractor for repairs? Would quickcrete do the job?

We live in a nice area.. and all of a sudden we got roof rats in our attic.. Are they about the size of a regular mouse.. They don't appear to be large.. Can't figure how they got up there unless they climbed from the trees.. The problems is apparently every where in our area.
