If you are in the UK your water will get to you through a variety of Iron, steel, copper, lead and plastic pipes. So I guess you can use any of these except lead. Copper and plastic are both definitely preferred and allowed for potable water.

Copper to PVC or Galvanized to PVC is transitional plumbing. Some states it is not code. some places it is. International Plumbing Codes are still in debate.
Galvanized can be used for Potable Water delivery. And in many areas it is the Code.It is a bad source but it is enduring.Somewhere along that line is Galvanized Pipe. That was the code. Still is in some environments. Industrial uses Galvanized for Fire Codes and other reasons, chemicals, gases, plastic pipe cannot hold up to some exposures in those areas.
Run it Galvanized to Copper, teflon tape and plumbers putty for the threads.

The only domestic pipe that should not be used is lead. Galvanised steel, PVC, copper are all fine.
