There can and very often are bends in air vents. 45 would be better but 90 degree will work.

It doesn't HAVE to be straight! They are usually straight in case it becomes clogged with debris(say maybe a bird nest). It would be much harder to clean out with elbows and bends. :-)=

90 degree elbows could be a problem, 45 degree elbows would be no problem.

Use duct tape is that a threat.
