We replaced the gears, then put it back together and we have turned the adjustment screws both ways - the ones on the front panel and the ones on the side and it will only run for 3 seconds then reverse for 3 seconds. Is there a way to reset the adjustment or get back to a starting point?

The gears were replaced because the opener is about 20 years old.

OK, here's my guess...
you might have gotten grease or dirt on the RPM sensor. the rpm sensor detects and times movement as parts of the safety reverse system. it is a small circuit board about 1" square. at the end of the motor shaft is a plastic cup with serrated edges the runs through basic photocells on that board. make sure you reinstalled that plastic cup. look at the board and identify those photocells. they are small black plastic pieces soldered on about the size of a pencil eraser but rectangular. use compressed air to blow them clean or just blow real hard. if the grease got on them, you can wipe it off with a paper towel. if you tried the limit and sensitivity settings already as you described, that would be the next place i would look.

btw, not to slam anybody, but if the opener worked the door for 20 yrs, i would guess it's strong enough, no reason to buy a bigger one. especially when you consider that the craftsman 1/2 hp opener is really just a 1/3 hp motor with a bigger start capacitor. that allows it to have a POTENTIAL of 1/2 hp on start up only. not a true 1/2 but it allows them to claim it is (cheap technicality).
i agree with your decision to repair rather than replace. the older units are much less likely to have electrical failures (circuit boards) than the new.

remove motor and check shaft for any movement. if there is any movement it will do that. push shaft all the way through and tighten collar. reinstall. Any further questions feel free to email me. also the kit should have come with a tube of grease. If you did not grease both gears first time do it while you have motor down. Make sure you lube them well. If you dont you cut the life down to a year if you are lucky. Those openers are very good openers. That is typically the only problem barring lightning strikes.
