Maintenance & Repairs - October 2006

I just bought a new home and we had a lot of rain. I noticed a water stain on the ceiling in the bathroom. The warranty guy said that he will have the roofer come back to reseal the vents on the roof. (my house is not the only one that had this issue). They are sending out a sheetrock replacement person but when I asked about replacing the insulation that was wet he said the sheetrock person doesn't do that and they were not going to replace it. I told him that it needed to be replaced. I do NOT and I am sure there are others that don't want mold/mildew growing inside the walls. He proceeded to tell me that we don't have mildew in TX and that mold & mildew are not the same thing. I don't care about the difference between the two. I know neither one is good. I just want it replaced, you can tell that the insulation has been wet. I don't want problems in the future.

As per up to date electrical regulations, there is an earth connection from my fuse box to a nearby gas pipe, secured with a metal screw-on clip with 'DO NOT REMOVE' tag. Unfortunately, the screw was positioned so that its head sticks out and is in the way of a wall to ceiling cupboard I am installing to cover the area. I need to turn this connection through 90 degrees on the gas pipe so that the screw head points side-on or away. In terms of safety, how do I do this? The screw will need to be loosened so the whole clip can be turned. Whilst it is loosened, there is no guarantee the connection won't be broken for a split second. Obviously I want to avoid getting an electrician out for something that may be very simple. Thanks

I have a hanging lamp which I am trying to replace. However I cannot figure out how to take off the glass cover part. It's composed of a wire hanging down from the ceiling leading to a round metal cover. This then combines with a hollow glass bowl which somehow twists into the metal top. I have two of these and one I can somehow open, which reveals that inside the metal lid there's a metal bar which snaps onto the glass bowl (lift the glass part on one end and it pops right out). However I can't seem to open the other one. Any ideas?

I have 220 volt well pump that I have had problem with. I understand the black and white wire each carry 110 volts and the copper is ground wire. I discovered the copper ground wire was twisted together and was arching so I fixed the wire with conectors. I found when I disconnected the wires in the well house they checked out okay from the well house to the pump with ohm meter. But when I reconnected them and turned the power on at the breaker it did not matter if the switch to turn on the pump was on or off the pump ran till it got right pressue and shut off. Any ideas how to find the problem or what it is??

How can a home 120v circuit that is "dead" (none of the recepticles work) have 120v between the neutral white and the ground? Could it be that the white neutral side be open down past that point on the way to the panel? The breaker is on and hot, the black wire is hot.

There are three thin wires leaving the switch (the wires are soldered to a little square box behind switch). They go to a thing I think is a relay (or a transformer). The thing says 24v on it. It is square and has a pipe-tail with coil inside. The think wires hook up to near the coil and the black and white wires hook up to the square side. The black wire goes to the light and it is hot but the light will NOT turn on. Why? How can I fix this? HELP. URGENT

My aquarium leaked, and I had 30 gallons of water spill to the floor on to the carpet. I live on the 2nd story of an apartment, and so the downstairs neighbor got flooded too. Apartment management called some contractors in right away to prevent mold and stuff. They rip up the carpet and padding, and remove the ceiling of the downstairs neighbor. They cut up some drywall at my place too.

Anyway they ran 2 dehumidifiers downstairs for 3 days. They ran one dehumidifier in my place for 3 days and I thought it done. They come back a few days later when I'm away, and then put back 2 dehumidifiers and have been running them for the past 3 days. They claim that the concrete under the carpet is still wet, but I can't feel any wetness. The area of water damage is approximately 10'x6.5', and the room size is around 12x22. So how long do you need to run dehumidifiers for? How can my downstairs neighbor be dry in 3 days but mine not be dry that fast?
