The company that sevices the air conditioners in my house wash the filters in water. It says on them that you should not get them wet.

As long as water does not damage the filter material, which you have implied it does'nt, then you only need ensure that they are thoroughly dry before you put them back in the air conditioners. I wash the synthetic material filters in my vacuum cleaner and they come-up fine even though the company recommend replacement.

If its wet you will cause a major blockage of air flow which will cause your unit to freeze. I would suggest getting new ones everytime you replace them. Unless the cost of replacement is too expensive and washing is an option.

Good idea with soapy water and get it as dry as possible.
