8 ft on center for posts then nail or screw the boards as tight together as possible when they dry there will be about 1/4 gap between them.

Perhaps you're as compulsive as I am...? The total length of the section is "filled" with pickets and the space between them. Between two posts there will be y pickets and y+1 spaces. The pickets will fill (y x the width of each) inches. The spaces "fill" the rest. Pick a trial number... see what you like. There. That's sorta' mathematical. The two answers which said "look at your neighbors" and "use a board as a spacer" were better.

I've seen people use pickets to determine the distance between pickets. Just put one beside the one first done, put another next to that one, and nail the second one in place. Remove the "spacer" and use it to space the next picket.

You might look for picket fences and use the spacing you see there if you like it
