There are three thin wires leaving the switch (the wires are soldered to a little square box behind switch). They go to a thing I think is a relay (or a transformer). The thing says 24v on it. It is square and has a pipe-tail with coil inside. The think wires hook up to near the coil and the black and white wires hook up to the square side. The black wire goes to the light and it is hot but the light will NOT turn on. Why? How can I fix this? HELP. URGENT

Try replacing the switch with a new one (if the wires are soldered in, it's an old switch that you're dealing with). Make sure you get one for your type of wiring (copper or aluminum). If the third wire is green, it's a common ground and can be grounded into the grounding screw of the new switch, if it's red, it's a "traveler" for those fixtures that can be controlled by two different switches (if it's one of these, make sure you buy a new "3-way" switch.

Good luck.
