It's a built in oven / micro-wave combo . There is no visable plug . Finally it shut off by itself ; but what's to prevent it from coming on again ? I happened to be standing in the kitchen when it happened or I wouldn't have believed it .

We turned off the circuit breaker for the oven& microwave ; but who's to say whether it could be smoldering from within over-night . Are there any other precautions to take until a repairman is available ?

Most MW have 3 door switches, some have 4.
You either have a door switch making connection when it's not supposed to (highly unlikely - only had that happen once in 37 years) OR
Whirlpool has a high-end combo MW/oven - out around 2 years - that has a thermostat that kicks in a cooling fan when the cavity temperature gets too high. This will happen either when you have run the MW or the oven for an extended period of time. It will sound, for all the world, like the MW is running.
If you get lucky and place in the MW a small amount of water in a container, check the water when the MW shuts off. If it's still cool, it's the cooling fan. If it's warm, call your service technician.
If you can't wait for that magic moment, call the manufacturer and explain the situation. It WILL get their attention. Then ask them if this is the model that has the cooling fan that occasionally activates.

Two things come to mind. First if you've recently cleaned the touchpad with a too wet cloth or sponge, water may have gotten into it and shorted out the contacts temporarily. The second is that if it had been run to make a steamy meal, the moisture may have condensed and shorted out the contacts. If the timer display had some Klingon looking numbers in the window while it was running, but returned to normal when it stopped, that is also a good indication of moisture being where it shouldn't be.

Do you have a loved on that has passed ? My stereo comes on all by itself a lot, especially when I am thinking about my mom.And the other day I heard a jingle bells tune coming from my dining room.It is a little ceramic Christmas book and when you open it it plays 3 or 4 tunes. The book was closed but still playing songs. I had just been thinking about my mom and Christmas without her when it started playing the tune. I was alone so nobody else made it play!

Some newer models have a timer mode
like a timed record mode on a VCR.

Maybe someone set it by accident.
