Garden & Landscape - July 2006

We are rebuilding a room addition which will require that the landscaping right next to the house be dug up. Is it possible to salvage these plants? What else can I do other than dig them up and keep in pots for a while. Isn't it difficult to do this in Texas in July?

I saw this in a magazine, but was told that it was discontinued. This garden trellis is beautiful, she would stand in my garden to make you think some lady was in the garden.

I'm looking for real or fake tree slices, wide enough to act as stepping stones, to make a path in my garden? I thought it would look nice with river rock filled in around them.

I have several tomato plants. They were blooming like crazy until a few weeks ago and then they stopped. Upon further inspection I noticed the flowers (and now some of the leaves) are being eaten. I have chicken wire around the plants and the affected areas are a good 4 feet off the ground, so I'm discounting smaller rodents. I also do not have deer in the area. Birds maybe? Does anyone know what could be the problem, and how I can resolve it?

The beetles are over-running our cukes, squash and zuchinni! I have noticed that they are even in the fields surrounding our garden. The garden is much too large to net (as I have heard to do), and mulching between and under the plants would be pretty tough to occomplish, also. I was hoping to find an organic, home-remedy spray or something that would keep them away. Thanks for your time!

When is the best month to plant marigolds ?I planted wild flowers on Mothers day but with this heat....they're not looking so good.plus there is grass and weeds growing up into it so i was going to dig them up and spend the rest of the summer nourishing the ground and gradually removing all the vegetation. But i would like to have marigolds for the fall.I live in nc.So year round it's usually semi nice here.Fall and spring are our only healthy mediums between hot and cold.So anyone have any advice? When should I plant them?Should I start them inside now and then bring them out to the garden in the fall?

It should not poison or affect in any way my grass, plants, mango and jackfruit tree. Somebody told me boric acid, but is it safe?

My lilac bush is being shadowed by a large rose of sharon I don't know if this has anything to do with it. But there is a white, mildew on the leaves. Could it be a vitamin thing or lack of sun?

When the grass sticks to the underside of the mower deck, it makes the grass harder to mow and it is harder on the engine. Obviously, it is best to mow when the grass is dry, but sometimes that just isn't an option. So is there anything that a person can do to stop the grass from sticking to the blade and the underside of the deck? (besides the obvious answer of not mowing the grass when it's wet) I've heard that there might be a special paint that you can paint the underside of the deck with that wet grass won't stick to, but I don't have any details on that. Can someone help me?

I just bought a house that has a drip system set up for all the plants. There are two large (~15' tall, ~6 year old) birch trees along the side yard. I noticed that they plugged up the drips for these two trees. They are in the flower bed right next to the lawn, but not actually on the lawn. They are not being directly watered. Is the water from the lawn good enough at this stage? Maybe because the roots are so deep? They look good, maybe a little thirsty (some leaves are kinda saggy), but I live in Sacramento and it's been over 100 for a while now. Thanks for the help!!

HI,
What is the best way to get this stuff from your yard for good? We have tried "Brush B Gone" and one other thing cant remember. The leaves were gone for alittle while, there back!Couple of our trees had it growing all the way to the top we chopped the vines and it killed what was high in the tree.
We just moved on this property last fall. no one has lived here for 15yrs. Its a mess!

Anyway. I'm 12 and me and my younger sister have dug a pond in our backyard and we need to know what kid of plants we need to put inside of it for either, goldfish or tadpoles (which would soon enough be frogs). So If you find a really good website for me, that would be great! Thank you all.
