Leaf scorch, which is when the leaves start turning brown starting from the tip, is common on recently transplanted trees and shrubs. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just keep watering once a week or so and let the tree get established. It takes a while for the roots to rebuild after being severed. Also root systems have to get used to your soil. They're used to living in potting soil.

Also keep in mind that soils in South Texas are generallly heavy clay soil. In other words, they will crack in the middle of the summer. You probably need to amend your soil with compost to help the plant establish. Also roots need to stay cool. The extreme heat in south texas kills new root growth because the soil tempurature gets hot as well. What helps with that is using mulch.

It sound to me too like too much water. If your soil has good drainage, it might be okay. If you soil is clay at all and holds water, then only water about once a week deeply(meaning about 30 minutes slowly or until the water runs off).

Good luck :-)

Plants can be overwatered. Also make sure it has plenty of nutrients such as nitrogen and watch for fungus.
