Roundup . . . from a distance. If you hoe it or burn it, you release the poisonous oils into the air. Roundup will go straight to the root. If you have a large infestation, it might take 2-3 doses.

If you can find someone who is not affected by poison ivy, get that person to use roundup on a glove, and wipe the roundup onto the leaves.
My sister in law uses chemical-proof gloves next to her hands, and then puts on white canvas work gloves with the rib knit wrists over that. She puts the Round up on the white gloves and swipes the weeds from the ground up to the ends of the vines.
Luckily, she is not affected by poison ivy, tho. and do be careful, no burning, and if you have to dispose of the vines in a landfill or city trash, tie it up securely and mark it as hazardous, to protect the guys on the trash truck.

Expose the roots with a pick or shovel, then spray a weedkiller on them. Lay black plastic over all, weight it down with rocks and/or bricks. Leave overwinter. Spray a pre-emergent on area in Spring. Dig up, remove & dispose of any shoots that appear--these might be seen as far as 30 feet from original site. Be persistant--these are weeds and persistance is their best --and worst--quality.
Good luck!

dont burn the stuff either,, the smoke from it will break you out in your lungs and body...

The easiest way to kill weeds and plans is to pour boiling water right at the root. Sometimes it takes a second dose, but I haven't met a plant that's survived yet.

The best way I found to kill either one is to expose the roots and pour gas on the roots. Don't burn it, you will inhale the fumes and set up an infection which can cause severe damage to your lungs and could quite possibly lead to death.

Ortho Poison Ivy killer. Do NOT burn it - you'll breathe it in your lungs and get an infection which will kill you.
