I'm tiling around a direct vent fireplace. Should I leave an 1/8, 3/16 inch gap or larger for expansion or can I tile right up to the fireplace. The tiles will be on a horizontal plane (hearth).

Our apartment complex gave all their tenants free weather tape for our windows and what not and I have no idea how to use it. It looks like normal, packaging tape (only a little thicker). The brand is Frost King, but found no info on their website. I don't want to peel off paint or ruin the windows by misusing it.

I recently received a flat screen tv and want to hang it up on the wall. I understand I have to buy a wall mount but I've also heard that you have to be sure your wall can "handle the weight of the tv" . Apparently, something about the drywall. I'm so very lost. Please help guys ... I don't want to hang it up and then it fall and break.

Between the tank and the base, I've had a leak, and the best "fix" seems to be to replace the gasket. However, I've been able to loosen the bolts, but there is so much corrosion that I can't get the nuts off the bolts between the tank and the toilet base. One is out, the other two seem locked in place. We have very hard water, with fluoride and arsenic as well as calcium and miscellaneous salts in the water. I'm thinking vinegar to counter the calcium carbonates...Am I on the right track?

I'm getting ready to wrap the nut end of the bolts in vinegar soaked rags. Any other solutions?

I just replaced a standard receptacle with the GFCI in the bathroom. Everything worked fine before the change. The heater and the GFCI share a common neutral I believe. The heater is on a dedicated hot wire. If I remove the GFCI and replace it with the standard receptacle everything works fine again. Any ideas why? Thanks.

I just moved into this apartment, and it is very nice with one major exception. The bedroom has sliding glass doors which face a very loud freeway, and It sounds like the thing is open all the time. I thought I would get used to the noise, but after a couple of weeks, I am still loosing sleep. I went to Lowes and Home Depot and even a music shop, but no one had any real solution. The hardware stores suggested I purchase these 8x4 foot (2/3" thick) insulation boards and then cut them to size to "plug" the doorway. This is not a problem, because I don't need to go in and out of this door, however, I am not sure that these panels will be enough. I am hoping someone has run into a similar problem and found a solution. The only other option is to wear ear plugs, which I did last night, but then you have to deal with not hearing anything (which is almost as bad as hearing everything if you know what I mean). Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Not sure on either, I like both, I heard that some tools have plastic parts is this true? Please advise on which is a better choice. Money is limited, but I can save it up. I will use it for around the house stuff and for outside work. I guess my question is which one of my two choices above would be the better bye?

My home has 60 amp service with screw -in type fuses. I plan on adding a electric dryer and would like to upgrade to 100 amp service and add a breaker panel. However, I cannot afford to upgrade the entire house yet.

So - would it be ok to have 100 amp service installed with a 100 amp breaker box - wiring the dryer directly out of the new box - but adding a 50/60 amp breaker and wiring the old screw in fuse box to the new box using that circuit? Allowing me to upgrade the rest at a later time ...

Would this be a feasable solution? I believe so, but wanted to ask ...

I redrilled/re-ran the wire so it's not near the pipe by the control-device on the shower, but will leave the rest, put on a vapor barrier, 1/2" backer board, fiberglass tape with thinset, redgard coating, then tile
will that be sufficient?
...that's an old phone line at the bottom tangled up

I am thinking of buying my husband a DeWalt DC988KA XRP hammer drill (keyless 1/2" chuck).

I'd like to also get him a starter bit set for it - any suggestions on what I should look for? I'm hoping to find something that includes bits for general purpose/household use and also light cement/masonry work.

Had they been wall tiles in a low-impact position, I might have taken a chance with enamel paint.

I'm not sure it would work for a floor, however. And definitely not in a bathroom.

How can a medium brown ceramic tile be darkened a couple of shades to a more attractive colour? I heard there are penetrating sealers which may do this. The tile surface is rough, not glossy at all.

Any comments?

Or do I just bite the bullet and pay for the whole floor to be ripped out and re-tiled?

The ground is hard as concrete when it's dry, but extremely spongy when wet. It's a whitish clay mix that has crushed rock covering and will be used heavily for vehicle use. The main questions are: What type of lime to use? How much per square foot? And what's the best way to apply it?

I'm working on a project for Christmas that requires the use of a few power tools - namely, a table saw and drill with some large bits. I don't own any of these tools. I don't need them for very long, only a few minutes, so I don't want to rent them for a full day or anything if I don't have to.

Do places exist where you can go in, bring your lumber (or whatever), and use the tools for a fee? Will places like Lowes or Home Depot do this for you if you purchase raw materials from them?
