I'm working on a project for Christmas that requires the use of a few power tools - namely, a table saw and drill with some large bits. I don't own any of these tools. I don't need them for very long, only a few minutes, so I don't want to rent them for a full day or anything if I don't have to.

Do places exist where you can go in, bring your lumber (or whatever), and use the tools for a fee? Will places like Lowes or Home Depot do this for you if you purchase raw materials from them?

I'd take the suggestion about a trades school or school that offers wood shop classes.

Lowes and HD typically will make limited amounts of cuts; then charge minimally for additional cutting. I've never experienced one that was set up to drill pieces; most especially any precision work you might need.

Certainly you might solicit the help or tools of friends/ family/ etc.

Since you don't want to bear the expense of renting; you might try a wood working shop or cabinet shop; but not knowing any fee structures they might have; even if they would do the work for you; it's difficult for us to know how much you'd be willing to spend.

Certainly your notion is a good one; Borrowing the tools a SHOP has. The major drawback in that is any liability they would have to support. IE: You cut off a thumb??? Tough choice for a shop owner; not knowing skills levels, etc.

Some large metropolitan park districts (and perhaps some smaller ones) offer woodshop classes or open studios to adults as well as children. If you're lucky enough to live in such a place, you could sign up for a class (for a nominal fee) and have access to woodworking tools that way.

Good luck-

Yes, for a fee Lowes or Home Depot or other places will cut and trim lumber for you. I don't think you even HAVE to buy from them but if you do they may do the cutting for free and the drilling for a very low price. A locally owned and operated lumber store might be even more willing to help you out. Also, as mentioned earlier, if classes are in session a high school or middle/junior high school or college might be willing to help you out.

See if there is a middle school or high school or community college that still teaches wood shop or industrial arts in your area. Contact the teacher and tell him or her your situation. S/he may have some ideas for you.
