Both previous answers are good. GO DEWALT! I am in the construction trade and I own both craftman and dewalt.
In short, the craftsman power tool (drill in my case) is fine for small things around the house and for my kid or wife to use, but Dewalt is what I use at work. Dewalt has more power, more torque, longer battery life, and is built tough. I have abused my Dewalt tools and they keep going strong.
Dewalt is a little more expencive, but you are buying quality.
In my opinion, Dewalt is the best brand when it comes to cordless power tools. Period.

Most tools have plastic parts. That is no problem. DeWalt and Craftsman are both good tools. I have some of each. Usually I can get Craftsman for a little less money. So I have more of those. I am happy with either one. Just rule out chinese junk.

They all have plastic parts(almost) nowadays. Remember, Craftsman doesn't make anything. Its all made by someone else, maybe even DeWalt. Personally, brands mean nothing to me. If the tool is good quality and suits my purposes, that's what I but. I do, however, avoid Snap-on, since I've had many, many better quality tools at a far more affordable price.
Check out pawn shops.

I'd go with the DeWalt brand. It's very commonly used by those in the construction trades and is very durable. Craftsman is not what it formerly was, unless you obtain Craftsman Professional. Sears, sadly, has now added the Craftsman name to some items which are lesser quality than in years past.

What kind of hand tools?
If you're looking for power tools, go with Dewalt. Hand tools, go with Craftsman; even better (if you happen to win the jackpot), go with Snap-On handtools. Check out Craigslist for bargains

i, like yourself, am on a tight budget.
dewalt makes premium (expensive) tools, craftsman are good tools and affordable.
if you;re a contractor, then go for the professional stuff for professional work.
if you're a DIYer like me, get craftsman. lifetime warranty and if/when you wear them out, take them back to sears and they'll replace them for free.

for small household projects hand tools are always best
you don't have to wait for the battery to charge or even plug it in
also, some of the nice old ones are worth buying just for the history within them
try ebay
