I am laying a decorative slab patio that covers an area of approx 15 square metres.

Is my assumption correct in that if I am laying it on a bed of mortar, I will only need sand and cement ? How much sand and cement would I need and approx how much would this cost ?

What if I lay my slabs on a bed of just screeded sand ? How much sand would I need and approx what cost would this be ?

All help is appreciated........thanks a lot.

How does the quality of low price, store's own brand paint vary from the big name twice the price stuff? Do you get less coverage for example? Is it 'watered down'. Thanks for helping.

my husband has on and off said that he wished he owned a soldering iron.
this year i want to surprise him by giving him one.. only problem is.. i have no idea what a soldering iron is.
and if i ask him, he'll know.
and if i ask at the store, the salesperson will do a job on me and have me spending way more then i need to.
sadly, this has happened to me on more then one occassion.

so..
here i am asking your advice.

what is a soldering iron?

he wants one just for around the house (not for frequent or heavy duty work) which brands do you recommend?

which brands to avoid?

thank you xx

Floor seems to be about 1/2 to 3/4 inchs high on left side. Ceiling is higher on right side. Planning on just leveling the ceiling from the shelve sides and have shelf uprights support it, but need the floor base level to accomplish that.

We moved our clothes line on the weekend, it is a traditional hills hoist, the kind you see in most Australian backyards. We dug the hole, but when we sunk the post in it is not as deep as the hole it was in previously. It seems pretty sturdy, but the problem is that there is cement at the bottom of the post protruding above ground level, which looks kind of ugly. Any ideas for getting this off? We tried a sledge hammer but it seemed pretty stuck fast. Otherwise, is there a way to cover it?

It runs water and stops by itself. Sometimes it won't run water for hours and sometimes every 8 seconds (I've kept track of it) other times its like every minute. If I am lucky the toilet won't run water and I'll be able to take a normal shower.

I would like to change the ugly chandelier in the home I just moved in to, however, looking at it I am afraid to do so. There is this UN-COVERED wire hanging down in the chandlier change next to a covered wire. In the picture I saw while trying to figure out how to install a chandelier there was only one wire and it was covered. What is the thin uncovered wire then???? is it safe to touch it??? Pls help

Hi, I have some serious bramble issues that need clearing.

I saw something which I can only describe as a meat cleaver on stick which seemed to be great for clearing them - what is the name of this item?

Also, what would be a good alterntive for clearing the brambles. There are a LOT, I would estimate dimensions at 40ft length, 10-15ft height, and 20ft width basically a massively overgrown fence.

Hello,

I am building a house that is 26' x 40' I would like to have a steel beam spanning the 40' length at the center of the 26' wall over the basement. Right now I have a choice if I want the beam flush with the perimeter sill plate, or lowered 1-1/2" and have a sill plate on top of the beam. There will be a support column at 15'-10" supporting the beam. The ends of the beam will be in pockets in a poured concrete wall.

The house will be a stick framed with no load bearing interior walls. The basement will be finished with drywall on the ceilings and the above floor will be 3/4" hardwood. The joists will be blocked and toe-nailed to the foundation wall sill plate.

I was wondering if you can tell me:

- What are the advantages and disadvantages resting the joists directly on the steel beam?
- If I do need a 2-by plate between the joists and the beam must it be pressure treated?
- What size beam and column I will need and how much should I expect to pay?

Thanks for your help!

We are converting our garage into a kitchen extension. It has a single brick wall at present, what gap should we leave between this and the stud wall we are putting up? Building regs will be inspecting it. They did tell me but I have forgotten.
