There should be a handle or lever that is very acessible . You shouldnt have to lay on your back or stick your head into the fireplace.Mine is actually visable when sitting infront of the fireplace when the damper is opened or closed. The damper is what you are closing . Its is a Flap, usually circular, that is open in the vertical position and closed in the horizontal. the lever on mine is pused up to open it and pulled down to close it. Good luck.

I agree - it IS dirty. Try not to put your head in the fireplace unless you really have to. You might end up with a face full of soot! If you do put your head in then close your eyes (it's dark and you can't really "see" anything anyway so there's no need for your eyes to be open at all). Instead just feel around the inside of the fireplace until you find the flu (if you wear a glove that might help keep you a little cleaner). The flu will probably be between 6 and 12 inches up, but it may be a little more.

Older fireplaces had a rod that stuck out the front of the unit just above the firebox. this rod was turned to open or close the damper. Some have a chain that hangs down and engages a clip to hold it in position. You will need to look up into the chimney to see what type mechanism yours has.

Closing the damper between the firebox and the flu after the fire goes out is safe as long as there is no additional fuel for the coals to re-ignite such as parts of a log that did not completely burn. If the damper is closed and a fire re-ignites the fire box will become extremelyy hot and the room could also fill with smoke.

Your fireplace can not get sick. However, there should be a damper for the flue at the top of the firebox. Usually you can use the hook of your poker to change the position of the damper from open to close.

There should be a handle way up inside of the shoot. You might have to lay on your back and put your head inside the fireplace and look up to see it. It's gross and dirty but it's the only way to find that handle.
