No offense meant at all, but a VALID contest might be one that judges the BEST USE of TIME?

Things we did in school:

Naked egg drop - drop raw egg into container designed to cushion fall. The smaller it was, the more points you got (if it worked)

Egg drop - create container that houses the raw egg, drop whole container (we did these off the top bleachers), again, the smaller the better

Mousetrap vehicles: make a small vehicle powered by a mousetrap - whoever goes furthest gets most points

Bridge building - we used balsa wood to build them and then they hung weight from the middle. You got points by how much weight it could hold before breaking, but also you got points taken off if it was heavy - the idea being that you use the least amount of materials to hold the most amount of weight

Lasers and mirrors: Start at one corner of the school with a pretty powerful laser. Using strategically positioned mirrors, see if you can get the laser to the other end of the school, going around corners and such. We put the mirrors on music stands to make them a good height for working with them.

Bone race: in 8th grade science we memorized all the bones in the body and then held contests to see who could say them all (understandably) the fastest.

Fun with straws: learn about the power it takes to suck up liquid with longer and longer straws (also the diameter plays a part) - for real long ones get aquarium tubing and stuff like that

Leaf collection contest for botany - who can collect the most leaf samples from native species (teaches them how to identify different plants and which plants are native and which are invaders)

Some of these things were individual projects, some were with partners, and others were teams. I remember these so vividly from school, unlike lectures. They were GREAT learning tools and so much fun because they were so hands-on.

Bridge building contest using toothpicks and glue. Limit the amount of toothpicks used to one box of flat toothpicks and white Elmer's glue. give a dimension that the bridge must span and test the strength by adding sand slowly to a bucket until it breaks. Judge on design and function (can a hotwheels car drive over the bridge?)

I built a bridge in high school that spanned 12" and held 158 lbs.

Another contest that is old and popular is to build a soap box car and race them down a ramp. Boy scouts derby car building races

I participated in a contest involving eggs, and rockets. the egg couldnt break inside the rocket when it landed. My team never broke an egg. the secret is, a way of slowing it down, and a high quality insulator. haha, we used napkins (they work excelently)
