my husband has on and off said that he wished he owned a soldering iron.
this year i want to surprise him by giving him one.. only problem is.. i have no idea what a soldering iron is.
and if i ask him, he'll know.
and if i ask at the store, the salesperson will do a job on me and have me spending way more then i need to.
sadly, this has happened to me on more then one occassion.

so..
here i am asking your advice.

what is a soldering iron?

he wants one just for around the house (not for frequent or heavy duty work) which brands do you recommend?

which brands to avoid?

thank you xx

Weller and Craftsman are the best I agree. A soldering iron looks like a gun but instead of a shaft at the end it is a loop of wire. This wire heats up and melds the solder (coil of metal) to other metal parts to either join two things together or make an electrical connection. I would advise you to avoid the little mom and pop hardware stores. Go to Sears or Home Depot or somewhere like that.

Before picking a brand you should decide on a type. There is the gun style that works good for larger things. then there is the pen type that works good for small things. Take a few moments to think about what your husband was doing when he said he wanted one. If he was trying to join two pieces of metal together, the gun (even though more expensive ) might be a better choice. If working with something that had a lot of small wires the pen type could be better.
As far as brand? I have used both weller and craftsman with no complaint.

Weller makes a good one. Look for one that comes in a kit with several different tips. And be sure to pick up a roll of solder while you're at the store. You're a nice wife!

I have a 20 year old Craftsman that works well.

What I have looks similar to a pistol. It has a barrel on which I can interchage tips and a trigger. It has a stand; and does as much FINE work as I need. It is not strictly the type an a circuit board fabricator would use however.
