What should be used to fill the remaining 3.5 inches...

My son got this new indoor basketball hoop that you can mount into the wall. He put it in his room which has carpet flooring. Is there some sort of portable mat that you can put on the carpet to make a basketball bounce?

Last night one toilet would not flush. I looked in the tank and there's no water in there.

I used the other toilet, but then this problem appeared in it, too (no water in tank).

I cannot flush either toilet. I've put a call into a plumber. What could be wrong? If I pour water in the tank, I've heard that the toilet will flush, but what if there's a stoppage? I don't want all that stuff all over my floor!

I want to add a receptacle to the hallway. There's a switch a few feet above the spot that I want the receptacle. The problem is that I looked at the switch and there wasn't any neutral passing through it. If there was I could have pigtailed my wires from there. My house has underground crawling space, so I'm guessing the wiring is going in from there. I would just have to find the junction box closest to the receptacle and grab my hot and neutral from there. I've never been down there, but I'm guessing there would be a stud right below the wall I need to go to, and I would have to drill a hole through that stud and then feed my wires through. Does that sound right? I'm a student electrician, so I haven't had much experience when it comes to locating where the wires are coming in. I know how to wire any circuit, though ( three-way switches,four-ways, half hot receptacles, gfci, etc. Just haven't experienced around the house much. Please let me know if I'm on the right track here,

Can I lie carpet over carpet - not fit it over, but to use it like a rug as I'm renting & can't change it
I am just moving into a rental property and the carpet is not very attractive. I thought I could just cover it with a new carpet, but not fit it as it would be against the landlord's wishes. Someone has now told me that you can't place carpt over carpet as it will damage the old carpet and ruck. I can cope with the rucking (just about) but am really worried about damaging the old carpet as it's not mine. Can anyone help or advise?

If you have a 10 foot long 2x4 of pressure treated wood and cut it vertically to make it two 10 foot long 2x2's, are they still 100% pressure treated? Is the pressure treating all teh way through the wood so when it is cut in half vertically, even the cut side is still pressure treated and safe from weather?

My bathroom walls are plasterboard which are skimmed and painted.

Is it ok to tile on top of this? and if i do will I run the risk of the tiles falling off in a few years?
I'm considering pulling down all the plasterboard and putting up good quality plywood in its place to tile on. Is this the best thing to do?

I found some termite droppings in the subfloor when I pulled up a tile floor in an upstairs bathroom. I then cut a 2.5'x3' hole in the subfloor to examine the joists. I hammered a screwdriver into the joists, and they were solid, with no visible or internal damage noted. I also did more spot checks throughout the entire subfloor with the hammer/screwdriver method, and notices no other soft spots or termite tunnels. I had two termite inspectors come out. One guy, who worked for a large termite company, said that it was probably ok and that I didn't need to do anything. The second guy, a lone ranger, told me basically that my house would fall down if it went untreated. He started his pricing at $1,200, but quickly got down to $500 when I would sign on right away.

Question...which guy is right? (Probably can't answer that, I'm sure). And 2, are there any good DIY treatments you would recommend.

Thanks for your input!

I found an old rusty horse shoe in my window well on the side of my house. My house has a history: it was an old cape but then they razed it, and made a new house. My basement and foundation is the same though. I am trying to get the rust off the top because it says something, so i soaked it in vinegar. I think it says Rodeo. But I want to know what year it is from to see how old it is. Any ideas how to get the rust off and get fing out what year it is from?

I have a Black & Decker cordless drill (model AD600). Right now we have a bit in there (flathead screwdriver) and it won't come out. I know we're using the right bit (it came with the dang thing). Last time all we had to do was push down on the part holding the bit in. Of course, we don't have the manual and it isn't available online. We just bought this thing last weekend. My husband doesn't want to just return it but I think something is wrong with it.
