Where our driveway lines up against the house, we need to fill it with caulk. However, the depth is approx 4 to 5 inches and I read that the caulk should be no more than 1.5 inches deep.
What should be used to fill the remaining 3.5 inches...

there are joint fill products that look like flexible styrofoam, about 3 feet long. Stuff that in the crack as an expansions joint filler the put the caulk in the rest of the gap to fill

The foam filler is called foam backer rod.

Hardware stores should have it, or can tell you where to get it.

That sounds really odd to me.I know you are supposed to leave a control joint if your going to butt it up to a wall, but it should have not been left unfinished. If it where me, I would get a empty squeeze bottle with a tip on the end, and before filling it I would mix up some Mortar (I like that because it is smooth) add some concrete glue because that will adhere the mortar to the concrete better, add some vinegar because that will give me more time before it cures ,and a little water. Fill the bottle, cut the tip off some, and squeeze it into the crack. Then I would add some pebbles into the crack for looks and tamp it down until it is level. But that is only what I would do if I was doing it. You could also buy some of that felt type material they use for the expansion joints and stick that in on top of the filling. But those are just my ideas on the matter. Byee

Without knowing the width of the space; I wouldn't use caulk in any case. I am curious however; as to WHY the space exists; even as an expansion joint it should have been filled.

I'd probably look into spacers; even rubberized

you need to put backer rod in first. you can buy this in whatever width you need and simply push it into the gap to the specs of the caulk you use...be sure everything is clean and dry
