Hi, I have some serious bramble issues that need clearing.

I saw something which I can only describe as a meat cleaver on stick which seemed to be great for clearing them - what is the name of this item?

Also, what would be a good alterntive for clearing the brambles. There are a LOT, I would estimate dimensions at 40ft length, 10-15ft height, and 20ft width basically a massively overgrown fence.

Some people have said scythe which is definitaley is not. A scythe is curved - the blade roughly 90 degrees to the handle.

The thing to which I am refering has the blade in line with the handle.

I think you are asking about a machette, sort of a long flat blade on a usually wooden handle. There's also a scythe, a curved blade on either a short handle or a longer one (aka the Grim Reaper).
If you have a serious blackberry problem and they're not sprayed, can you see if you can borrow a goat to tether there? The goat will get rid of all the blackberries to the roots, they prefer browsing to grazing (wood to grass), and the processing of any seeds through their gut makes them less viable, reducing the risk of them returning. The advantages are that apart from providing some water and shelter for them, they will do all the hard work. And what they leave behind is an excellent fertilizer.

Youl'll think I'm crazy, but around here we hire a herd of goats. They can clear out an acre of thick brambles in a day.

A sythe is not really a good choice--I would use what we call a bush whacker. It has a flat blade supported on both ends by a metal frame on a pole.

it's called a scythe (or at least that's what my bramble-cutter is called) kinda like the thing that Death is always holding in the movies...

even better, if you have an equipment rental shop near you, ask if they have a power brush cutter.. it's like a little tractor, but it has an arm with a giant lawn-mower head that can go up the sides of hills, and reach just about anywhere. My neighbor has one, and it even cut tree branches as thick as 1 inch diameter! really neat!!

Sounds like a "pole axe"
Flat slightly hooked blade on the end of a long handle.
