My Victorian terrace has very thin glass wool loft insulation and I want to upgrade to beat the chill! But I'm confused by the different types of insulation and whether I should buy glass wool again, or some of the reflective foil insulation instead. What's the difference / advantage of either?

I suppose whatever I buy, I should lay it directly over the top of the old insulation? Thanks

I attempted to use the old gaskets and pipe dope to seal the threads, but the dang thing still leaks. Do you need to replace all gaskets every time you take apart a plumbed line? Do I need to use plumbers putty instead of pipe dope? any help would be excellent!

The house is 1800 square feet, single story, no attic, and the roof is composition shingle. I want to take out a load bearing wall and need to determine the number of columns it will take to span a 24 foot header in the living room.

No, I am not highering an engineer. This house is in the boondocks and no one will go out there.

How much does the roof weigh?

However, the roof is flat, and I may need dormers to adjust head room. right now, the open to the attic is like ...stairs and then a push in the ceiling to get in. I would like to add stairs. Does anyone know what the approx. price for renovating an attice would be, or is that something I can do myself. Any web cites for reference?
