Either use a pipe/stud detector (available just about everywhere) or you could try knocking on the wall (not very reliable) - when you find a spot that sounds solid as opposed to hollow, use a thin nail or similar to push through the board - keep doing this until you find the edges of the stud and then mark them. If you need to drill into another stud, simply mark the middle of the one you've already found and measure 15" from there - studs are normally set at 15" centres.

If you don't have access to a stud-finder, find an outlet or light switch. Take off the cover and determine on which side of the outlet that there is a stud. Most studs are placed 16" on center and a few on 24". Measure from there to the specific stud you want to drill. You can then take a very small nail and tap it in to determine for sure that there is a stud there.

Look very closely at the wall and see if you can find any nails - That would show you where your stud is. If that doesn't work you can gently tap along the wall until you don't hear a hollow sound. If you still not sure go to Home Depot and buy a stud finder - there very cheap and very handy to have a round

Use a stud finder -- available at home depot type stores. Some are simple magnets which point to the drywall nails in the studs and cost about $2,00 others are more complicated electronic devices which sense the denser wood or metal studs. I've been using the simple magnet type for about 40 years.

A stud finders the easiest way but if not you can just tap on the walla to find where it sounds most dense , then drill a small screw into it to see if it "catches" a stud. then measure down from that 16 " and you should find another stud.

The best way is to use a stud finder you can purchase one at any home center. You can also use a tape measure. come off the corner of the wall and measure 2ft. every 2 ft on center will be a stud.

Use a stud and wire finder. Get a good brand usually around $30 + from Menards, Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.

a stud finder works well, but it only locates the metal screws and nails in the studs. could use a hammer and tap lightly on the wall to find the different sound it makes to find a stud. a fairly new house, the studs should be 16in apart. in older houses they range from 16in-24in like my house.

Knock on the wall. A spot with a stud will have a more solid sound. A spot without will sound hollow.
