The other night I was awakened by a clanking/flapping noise from my heat pump (all electric). It was 3 AM, so I just shut it off to stop the noise plus avoid any further damage.I called an HVAC place in the morning and they came out.Guy diagnosed it as being the compressor being shot (basically on it's last legs). He said I can make it through the winter by using emergency heat.Yes, I know it'll cost more to run and he said it would too, but said it's really not THAT much more.He said a new compressor would be aprox $1500.But since my heat pump unit as a whole is 20-25+ years old, it might be a bad idea to put a new compressor in a unit so old that something else just might go in the near future. So, two questions.By running emergency heat through the winter, will the 'coils' or 'heating strips' burn out over time? How long?Is it safe to do this for the rest of winter? And 2, how much does a new heat pump cost?He quoted me aprox $5200 installed. My place is only 750-800 SqFt.Is $5200 legit?

I was flipping through some design magazines and this has been puzzling me. How do designers hide the electric cord for lamps that sit in the middle of the room. I don't want my couches against the wall. How do I add ambient light without tripping over these cords? Thanks!

Right, I have a 14 foot trampoline and enclosure for Christmas day. The problem is, I wanted to have it in the garden all built up, for Christmas morning when the kids wake up, (obviously we can't make it before Christmas day as it would spoil the surprise) and their bedroom faces the garden. Unless my partner is out at 3 on the morning building it, I can't see a way round it. Suggestions please. Thanks

Hi, everyone.

Living in South Florida I've started noticing mysterious little holes on my clothes, such as Shorts, T-shirts, sweaters, etc.
Could that be that something is eating my clothes?

Thank you,

I recently installed a new door on my home, that has a dead bolt and regular door knob assembly on the new door. I am trying to install a new storm door, but the door knob assembly on the storm door and the dead bolt assembly on the new door are clashing and will not let the storm door close. I know this is not a new problem, so would someone give me a solution?

Hello all,
Recently we had to service our refrigerator (only 4 yrs old) due to frost buildup and it cost us a lot for a small job.

Do others of you insure or purchase warranty for your major
home appliances (fridge, washer, stove, built-in micro, etc.) and if so is there a reliable service company?

Please let me have your feedback!

Our appliances are between 4-8 years old.

Thanks!!

I am finishing my basement in my 3 story townhouse and am preparing an application for an electrical permit. The service panel (electrical box) is in my garage (same story/floor as the basement). The basement room I'm going to finish is directly behind the garage. I want to run new circuits from the service panel to the basement by running NM cable along the concrete garage wall, through the drywall, and into the basement room.

Here's my question? Can I run NM cable along the concrete walls of my garage without covering them up? What about metal conduit? Can you run NM electrical wiring through conduit? .

and every website I've read says that they stay hidden and you'll never actually see them. Well, mine comes out and runs around like we're having play time. And it won't go anywhere near the traps. I moved them to his favorite spot (in my closet) and now he just hangs with me in the living room instead. Is there anything else I can do to get rid of it?
