I was flipping through some design magazines and this has been puzzling me. How do designers hide the electric cord for lamps that sit in the middle of the room. I don't want my couches against the wall. How do I add ambient light without tripping over these cords? Thanks!

If you have a hard-surface floor and a way to get underneath it, you can install an outlet in the floor where you plan to put the lamp.

Otherwise, consider a hanging lamp that has the cord intertwined with a chain. You can then plug the lamp into a socket, run the cord along the baseboard to a corner, bring the cord up the corner to the ceiling, and then swag the chain/cord over to the ceiling above where the lamp will hang. If you use cable clips to secure the cord neatly into the corner, it will not be very noticeable.

They air brush them out of the picture. Don't believe everything you see in a magazine!
