warranty for home appliances?

Hello all,
Recently we had to service our refrigerator (only 4 yrs old) due to frost buildup and it cost us a lot for a small job.

Do others of you insure or purchase warranty for your major
home appliances (fridge, washer, stove, built-in micro, etc.) and if so is there a reliable service company?

Please let me have your feedback!

Thanks for responding. Now, one of you says that Sears warranty is good. Is this a warranty on all your appliances? Do the appliances have to be bought from Sears? And do you have to get this warranty when you buy the appliance?

In my case, the appliances are mostly whirpool and GE brands. And i did not purchase any extended warranties.

I have literally saved thousands of dollars on appliance repair with my sears home warranty and it is worth every penney I pay for it. I know that Consumer Reports says home warranties or extended warranties are not worth it, but they sure have been for me. The only extended warranty I never used was for a Sony TV I purchased for $19, (though they did replace the remote for free). I buy usually the most reliable, top end appliances that they recommend and have had warranty repairs by sears on almost every one of them. I truly believe that as appliances have gone digital with more bells and whistles, there is just simply more that goes wrong with them. I have had the GE home warranty on my appliances and found their coverage to be less extensive than the sears and doesn't include things like food in the freezer when the compressor goes out. Plus, sears sends the parts directly to you, they send out a sears service person and do not contract with local appliance service companies. That means, when you receive the part at your home, you call sears to schedule the installation and repair. With GE, the part is sent to the contractor who often doesn't notify you that they have the part and you are hounding them until THEY have the time in their schedule for the installation. Moreover, as long as your appliances are not over 10 years old, sears will warrant them while other companies won't take any appliance over 5 years. The worst appliance I own is my GE profile side by side refridgerator/freezer which has had enough repairs that I could have bought a top notch new fridge, icemaker at least twice replaced, condensor, coils, seals, thermostat, motor, all replaced by sears without one dime being charged to me and all of the food was covered. Furthermore, they will cover cosmetic defects (like the grille under the water maker that started to peel off the silver) the front of the dishwasher where the heat vent discolored the panel that other warranties don't. Finally, if you have NO claims in a particular year, they send you a gift certificate for anything at sears in nearly the amount of the premuim you paid for that appliance. For me, it is a piece of mind for my pocketbook.

Warranties are NOT always more than a service call. If you buy an appliance from Home Depot or Lowes the extended warranty is only $60 for 3 years, six years ago I had Sears come look at my dryer and it was $65 just for the trip out. Sears' warranties are much more expensive because they claim to have a "maintenance plan" where they come and look at the applinace once a year. In your case, You ,ight have to look at a home warranty (which still charges you for a service call, just not the parts). Or go with one of the suggestions above.

I have given up on Home Warranty companies because they tend to not show up and pay a lot of money for techs to find excuses to not pay like if you have the power company guy look at your water heater and don't have him put it back to gather because it is obvious what is wrong with it.

I tend to get the extended warranty form the store like Home Depot or Lowes if price under not to big a percentage of the price of the appliance when I buy since I have had terrible experiences with Home Appliance Warranty companies.

A home warranty from somebody like American Home Shield might be a good solution if you're worried about your appliances aging. They can help cover the costs of repair or replacement when something breaks down. You'll just have to pay a small service fee for the contractor visit.

below is a website that may be helpful. A friend of mine works at one of their locations; they deal with warranties for tires, appliances, tools, etc...

I never bought extended warranties for any of my appliances. Some people add extra warranties on everything. It is a personal choice.
