no i do it all the time.i forget to put dishes i am using in there so i open it shut it and it returns right were it left off.

You will lose allot of heat, but that would be the only thing affected. I would not add anything to far into the wash cycle, but I have had to grab an item to use, I just wash or rinse by hand then use it. But you don't want to do it too often because the hot water temp is very important for proper cleaning.

Certainly not - unless you open it after the original wash cycle. If you open it to add items in the rinse cycle, they will not be properly washed as no detergent will remain left over.

I suggest only adding new items while it is in the first wash cycle.

Depends on the dishwasher. Some will, some won't.

No. They have a memory like an elephant. It will know where it was and resume. :o)
