I am replacing an old light fixture that has been connected to a switch box with dimmer. The house was built in around 1969 or 70. Not many updates to fixtures.

The existing wiring in the junction box is all whit/off white. I have identified the LIVE wires that are capped together and they were connected to a smooth wire from the old fixture ( the old fixture had three wires. Two that were connected but could be perferated apart. One feels smoother than the other. The third wire is copper and twisted around a screw attached to the support bracket.). The second wire (rougher feel) from the old fixture was connected to another single wire in the junction box. There is a third group of capped wires in the junction box that wasn't connected to anything.

The new fixture only has (4) black and (4) white wires. The wires are in sets directly from each light bulb socket. There is no copper wire like the old fixture. I don't know how to distinguish what should be attached to what.

The closer unit is in the top frame and the arm is mounted to the top of the door. The closer has a square peg that the arm is clamped to. The door has to be open to access the arm hardware, but I know that if I loosen the hardware, the peg will rotate to the closed position. How do I prevent this from happening? Right now the door will not close all the way which is an indication that the arm is worn out or the peg is stripped.

I have these little flies all over my houseplants. My hubby threatened to throw them all out (they are all over the place).
There has got to be something I can do to get rid of them?
I even tried not watering them for a couple of weeks, but the flies are still there!

The owners purchased the house about a year ago and did some improvements themselves (electrical, new flooring, paint, tile in kitchen, landscaping) and are now selling the house for $35,000 more than what they paid. We really like the house but we think that it is overpriced. Additionally, there seems to be a problem with the roof. In one spot it looks like the roof might be sagging slightly and it was not shingled correctly (shingles look like they could fly off in a wind storm). So what would you do?

I"m trying to remove thick layer of carpet glue from concrete slab in order to prepare the slab for either painting or staining. They sell this stuff at Lowes and claim 1 quart yields 1.25 gallons of mixed product. They further claim that it will cover approximately 6 square yards. If it works, it is by far the cheapest solution for removing carpet glue. Anybody know anything about it?

We have a few glass blocks built into the wall. I used joint compound to fill them in but the next day it had all cracked (still up there though). Should I have used a different medium and also is there a certain way to prep glass first so the material sticks?

When I moved into the house, all of the house paint was stored in the laundry room but I would rather keep it in the garage. I was wondering if I would mess up the paint if I did. I live in the southern ohio/western west virginia/eastern kentucky region.

my saw seems to have a hard time going through wood and it burns the wood on both sides, smoking as it goes. seems to want to pull to the right. the blade is on tight and it's a new blade. thought at first it was because I can't cut straight but it does it everytime, everywhere. I know I'm not that bad of a cutter

I used dry graphite lubricant on all of the door hinges (it's a 4 panel 2-car garage door, fiberglass, attached to a 1/2 horse Craftsman opener that isn't brand new but isn't super old either), and I also increased the spring tension slightly to give the door-opener a little more help, but the door still stops going up about 1/4th the way up when it's cold outside.

If opening the door by hand (disconnecting the automatic opener) the door goes up and down fairly easily no matter how cold it is outside. The door opener also works fine if the temp is above about 25 degrees F. Any suggestions on a fix would be greatly appreciated because I'm out of ideas. Thanks.

I live in a two-story townhouse that has no ceiling fans. All the light switches controll the lamps plugged into the outlets. We would like to install one ceiling fan in the living room and one in our bedroom. I have tried to search online, but all I can find is how to replace an light with a ceiling fan. Anyone provide a link or advise on how to tackle this?
