to pull it up, grab a corner with a pair of pliers. it is easiest to get it started, there. you will need to cut and seams leading to areas you will not want to pull up. a razor knife or heavy scissors will do.
the room edges are just stuck down to tackstrip and poked under a gap at the bottom of the baseboard.
If u have metal visible at a carpet/tile type of junction, the metal you see is a lip of soft metal that is bent down over the edge of the carpet to hold it in place.
if u don't have metal that u see, it is the same as above, just hidden. in either case, use the "claw" side of a carpenters hammer and pry the metal up a little so u can pull the carpet edge out of it.
Laying new carpet or relaying the same old carpet (as is done sometimes after getting padding wet and replacing it, for instance) is a bit more difficult and requires the use of a seam iron, knee kicker, power stretcher and a good sense of measuring and cutting large pieces of stiff material. I recommend hiring someone for this or write to my email and i will give u exact instructions and be available for advice. the tools are rentable, so if u r up to it, do it.
good luck.

Reinstalling Carpet

You will need to grab a corner of the carpet and start pulling it off the tack less strips till it has cleared the area you want to get to. Then you will need to remove the padding. Slowly pull on the pad if it stapled down. If it is glued down you will need the help of a non gouging wide blade to help in the glued down area. Then reinstall padding by stapling it back down and then reinstall carpet by going out and renting a knee kicker. Personally i would call your nearest carpet supply company and ask for 3 of the installers that come in and purchase from them. Give them a call. I`m sure they could help you out for a nominal fee.

if the carpet is glued down just cut around the door opening, with a carpet knife, the cut wont show that much, and you can vac the area to blend the fibers,

Most wtw carpet is held down w/grip strips- unless U r prepared to stretch carpet to refasten it this is very bad idea.
Most houses hav crawl space access through outside or glory hole. I'd look for that first.
