My husband being the overly inteligent person he is decided to roast garlic in the microwave, needless to say he burnt it and no matter how many times I scrub the microwave with soap and water the smell wont leave and if I turn the microwave on the smell gets so much stronger, how do I get rid of it without having to but a new one?

Microwave Smells

This might not be "doable", at least in the short term, because odors can get "trapped" in the machine's vents; they will eventually dissipate, though.

However, you can try this, which worked when I burnt microwave popcorn:

Fill a microwaveable 8-12 ounce glass or cup half-way with water and then add a few tablespoons of lemon juice, and mix thoroughly. Put the glass or cup in the center of the microwave, and run the machine until the liquid boils. LEAVE IT ALONE for about fifteen minutes (i.e., do NOT open the microwave door!). Afterwards, open the door, remove the glass or cup, CAREFULLY, as it might still be hot, and then GENTLY wipe the interior of the microwave - - which should have lemony-smelling condensation all around it - - with a clean cloth or towel until it is thoroughly dried. Don't forget to scrub the "roof" of the microwave interior! You can also use the glass or cup's hot lemon-water directly on the cloth or towel, if you wish, provided, of course, that you're careful not to burn yourself! Repeat until you can't smell it anymore (don't forget about my caution at the very top), but no more than three times (if you still smell it after three attempts, then it won't go away anytime soon!). When you're done, make sure that the entire interior is clean and dry, then leave the microwave door OPEN overnight (if you have toddlers, you might want to skip that part, as you don't want little hands getting into the device; it won't run with the door open, of course, but you never what mischief the kiddies can cause!).

Of course, if all else fails, consider cooking bread in the microwave oven to go with a spaghetti dinner: Garlic bread all around! ;)

try microwaving a wet dish towel for about ten minutes. that will give the dish towel time to heat up. and it should absorb the odor. you might also sprinkle baking soda on the dish towel.
