You didn't say where in the Houston area you live but in general, you don't find moles, gophers, prairie dogs, or ground hogs in the area. The heavy clay soil doesn't support these type of animals. They typically need a more sandy soil.
If you live near one of the few areas where there is some sandy soil, you might have a mole but moles very seldom come above ground to leave a hole. They basically burrow all of their lives and leave tunnels behind where ever they go.
It is more likely a possum, nutria or armadillo. If it is a small hole, about the size of your thumb, then you could have a crayfish.
Possums are cat like in size. Nutria can be even larger than a cat and armadillos vary in size from that of a cat to much larger depending on age.

could possibly be a gopher. Have you called animal control to come out and look at the hole?

Usually a gopher or mole in Texas.... there are traps you can buy and catch them yourself or call any of the pest control pros and they should be able to help you out.
