tried every method, including ammonia, water, gas bombs, traps, mothballs, juicy fruit gum, cats, Critter Ridder (pepper stuff) and poison granules. The poison was the last thing I put in the ground as a last resort. It seems that is what finally worked. It's been 5 weeks since we have seen a gopher in our yard, and the neighbors are complaining they have some, so I guess it worked! I found the main tunnel, and opened it up wide. Then I liberally sprinkled the poison in the hole, and left the hole open. When I came back the hole was filled in and I never saw another critter. So whether that worked or something else I stuck in the ground finally got them, I'm not sure. I do know that the hibiscus they were devouring has come back lovely green and is blooming, and nothing else has died or disappeared suddenly underground. Also visit the Garden Clinic forum. There is a very extensive thread devoted to gophers, with something like 90 or so follow ups with every kind of method of getting the little pests out of your yard.

It's not a cure all but try getting a box of moth balls (not flakes).
anywhere you can find a hole, throw down a handful. Don't let them lay on top of the ground because the chemicals may cause injury to baby birds. The odor is obnoxious to most rodents/small animals and remember to replenish after it rains. Good luck

At Home Depot or Lowes, you can get Gopher traps that worked great for me.They are spring loaded, and get it in the neck as it is coming out of the hole. After that one time they never came back.
Good Luck

One thing that you can do is to find a hole from them, take a half cup of clorox and pour it in the hole, take a deep breather and then pour a half cup of ammonia in the hole and shove a rag in or cover it quickly. This forms the gas that is used for execution of prisoners and will kill the golpher but it is dangerous to anyone who breathes the fumes so cover your face with a rag of some kind and try not to breath those fumes yourself. We used that trick several times to get rid of moles in the past and it worked.

In the spring or summer depending on where u live, try flushing out the gophers with a water hose and then, once out, fill in their holes with steel wool and cover with soil.
