I live in Austin TX.
I just bought a home (HUD foreclosure) & the carpet is yuk!
I'm hoping to pull it up soon (begining of 2008) but in the meantime I have to clean it somehow!
I think the previous owners had pets or something, I don't know how anyone can get a carpet THAT dirty!

My question:
Has anyone used those carpet cleaner rental thingies you rent at the grocery store (or anywhere, I don't know what they're called but they're those bulky red/blak cleaners..

Any suggestions on getting the funk out?
My whole house STINKS & I think it's coming from the carpet.. if it's not.. then I'm SOL!

I currently have some "builder's grade" Broan exhaust fans in my bathroom. Over the last 5 years or so they have gotten REALLY noisy. It looks like it would be a huge pain in the butt to clean them -- the vacuum cleaner nozzle doesn't fit to clean it.

Anyway, Broan sells a kit to swap out the noisy fan (& motor). Are these worth it? And what do I need to look out for in terms of them fitting my existing fan housing? Also, I'm up for any other suggestions regarding quieting these fans. . .

Thanks!

I have two separate light switches that control two separate lights in my kitchen. These lights are from the same feed. The problem I'm having is that the one light will only turn on when the other light is turned on? I'm pretty sure I've connected everything properly so I'm stumped. Can anyone help me out?

Just purchased patterned carpet tiles for the storage room and after removing them from the box we realized that there are numbers (from 1 to 4) and arrows on the back of the tiles. Since this is my first time installing them, I have no idea what the numbers mean (no in-dept instructions included, except that I should lay them in the same direction (hence the arrows)) and how to use them to properly install the tiles. Do they go: row of 1-1-1 and then 2-2-2 or 1-2-3-4 or should I just look at the pattern and forget the numbers?
Any help greatly appreciated!

I have relatively new windows in my bedroom upstairs. It's an older house, a bungalow (1950s), and it's getting drafty and cold. I'm not sure if there's anything I can do about insulation or what, but with gas prices on the rise again, I can't afford to counter that coldness with just strictly turning the heat up.

I have a buddy who tried putting that "blow-in" insulation in and he said it sucked. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

In general, what is the purpose of an attic?

We were thinking of taking our 2nd floor ceilings and moving them up, hence getting rid of our tiny attic.

Or is there some reason we should be keeping attic?
