Hey its not a big deal...if its a pop up toaster its very low maintenace....it rarely gets very dirty... so dont worry of using a second hand one....it may just have some dry crumbs which can be easily removed and cleaned..... only thing u need to do is... open the vent... below the toaster....(its kind of a metal door...)
all the crumbs will fall off....now u can take a nice kitchen napkin and whipe off the interior.... allow it to dry for sometime.... then u can start using it.....

you can also.. make ur toaster upside down... but the above is a better option as the vent is given for cleaning purpose...:)

keep removing the crumbs from inside the toaster.... now and then....:) so that it is good and hygienic for ur family to use..

cheers

You can get a new toaster for $8. Don't buy a used one. But if you must. Clean the wires that the bread rest against. It's the only thing that comes in contact with the bread. Buy a new one.

Safe? Turn it on for one cycle and it will be completely sterile inside. Clean? Just shake the crumbs out and/or dump the crumb tray at the bottom.

I suggest that the toaster you get should be one with the crumb tray. the crumb tray should just clean the crumbs.

Open the bottom and bang out the crumbs. Otherwise it is safe to use as it is an oven and it will kill any germs.

all you have to do is open the bottom of the toaster, shake it out over the trash can and then use dish cloth with warm water to wipe it. make sure it is UNPLUGGED first !!!!!!!!!!!!
