In 45 plus years I may have become more IGNORANT than ever before; but I am WAY confused about any questions regarding Polishing, Travertine/ marble/ or granite.

Certainly from a Quarry the substances may need Milling/polishing; most often done with wet ROUGES and buffers, but to mainatin a "SHINE" on a quality product might need no more than ammonia and water; or Vinegar and water. If your tile is Dulling; then perhaps you should wonder why?

Of the 3 mentioned above; Travertine would be the most porous; weakest; and most susseptable to soiling.

Just one old mans experienced opinion.

I just had 1100 square feet of travertine installed in my house;to bring out a uniform sheen(I was not pleased with the installed finish) the installer and I used a mechanical floor polisher(you can rent these at a contractors rental store) with a natural color(beige) medium grit buffing pad along with granite cleaning solution.IMPORTANT NOTE!! do not use a "colored" buffing pad!!!!!! The dye will bleed out and stain the tile;it's extremely difficult to get the dye off of the tile!!!!!
When finished,it ended up being a very light "sheen".Not a high polished look, but not a dull finish either.
Whatever you do,do not use any type of floor wax.

I use Dia-Glo diamond polishing compound for light marble by Abrasives Technology. www.abrasivetechnology.com. I have travertine countertops in the kitchen, and this stuff is wonderful. Took off all of the water marks and travertine tile glows like new.!! (actually better). comes with complete instructions, but beware, it is not an easy 10 minute project.

Good luck.
