I have recently taken over an allotment that has a patch (1m x 2m) of raspberry canes. The plot has been unused for 18 months. The canes are about 3 to 4 feet tall, and tangled into each other. Most of the canes are bare but a few have some new leaves on them. What can I do to bring them back? Should I cut them right back or should I leave them as they are?

What does BTU stand for? Do you think a 8,000Btu window unit would cool the room?

I can't remember if it's just called "Pumice" on the label, but it's a long rectangular stone that's used for removing tough stains on porcelain, etc.
I've looked where they keep other household cleaners but can't find it. Am I looking in the wrong department?

It randomly runs at night and throughout the day. How do you fix this?

Hi I am looking at buying a home in Grundy VA. It will be sold to me for a cheap cost (10,000) because It is a real fixer upper. ( New floors, roof, all new appliances, plus more) The only thing I am having a problem with is there is no septic system. From what I have been told is that the house has been in the family since it was built and they lost it due to forclosur. The only septic system was contected to the neighbors house down the road but the neighbor is not wanting the new owners to use it because they are the family who use to own it and have been trying to coming up with the money to buy it for the last 3 years or so. The realitor is in the process of having the health department check to see if one can be put in. She also say we might beable to bride the neighbors into letingus use theirs. Which I really do not want to do. So here is my questions..Is there anyway I can force them to let us use it? OR is there a alternative to a septic tank ? Thanks~!!!

I am interested in turning my small time hobby of gardening into a bit of a career. Are there classes, certifications, training that I can take in order to become an expert on plants, trees, etc? I'd like to have a deep knowledge of the various kinds of trees, shrubs, flowers that work in different climates, how to best plant and maintain them, to design landscapes with a variety of well-coordinated plants, etc. Should I try to become a certified arborist? Where do I start exploring this potential new career direction? Thanks.

My neighbors park in front of my house and then litter all over the place. I've gone over several times to talk to them about it. They said it was there kids friends and they would talk to them about it but they continue to litter in front of my house.
I don't care about the parking, it's the littering making my house look nasty. Legally What can I do? I live in Seattle WA.

Yesterday I dug a 2 foot by 8 foot patch in my backyard that I plan to use for a small veggie/herb garden. The soil is in reasonably good condition and looks to be sandy and clayey. I plan to add some organic material from my compost heap when it produces some more hummus.

Other than that, is there anything else I need to do with the soil to ready it for planting? I don't plan to plant anything fancy, just some basil, rosemary, mint, oregano, tomatoes, strawberries, blackberries and a few other things. I'm just concerned because I've never gardened before.

The spot I've picked gets lots of sun 10-plus hours a day. I plan to start small and add on if my first fruits are successful. Any tips on knowing when the soil is ready to plant?

We have a 100-gallon Rubbermaid stock tank for our horse. Lately, algae has been growing in the tank -- probably due to the hay, grass, and feed bits the horse drops in when he drinks. How can we control the algae? Is there a better way than draining and cleaning (which seems to waste a lot of water)

I visited Oklahoma City this weekend. Everywhere I traveled, I encountered beautiful trees covered with white blossoms. After a bit of internet research, I have come to believe the trees were snowdrift crabapples... but the ones I got close were surrounded by a foul odor, and nothing on the internet refers to a scent of any kind coming from this species. Additionally, I couldn't be 100% positive the scent was coming directly from the trees themselves.

What else could have given off such a foul odor if it wasn't coming from the tree? I'd like to plant these trees in my garden, but would avoid it if the scent will follow!

I am caring for a property in hot southern California in the desert near Palm Springs. The mature orange and lemon tree on the property seems to be slowly dying. No new leaves are forming and the old ones have fallen off. I have also planted 3 other baby citrus trees (grapefruit, lemon, lime) and only one of those (grapefuit) is leafing and flowering. The other 2 lost their leaves and the trees look like green sticks in the ground.

I have been watering them every other day and removing some of the dead limbs. Does anyone have any advice on saving the remaining trees and any tips on keeping baby citrus trees healthy and growing? Do I need a specific fertilizer? Any answers would be helpful.

PS All of the other plants on the property are thiriving---however most of them are drought and heat tolerant. (Bougainvilla, cactus, fig, oleander, palms.)
